We saw this in 2022 when OpenAI released ChatGPT, then when Microsoft launched Bing, and now, in 2023, when Google released Bard

One thing is sure: the need for a performant AI chatbot is undeniable, as it can automate mundane tasks, increase productivity, generate AI images, answer questions, and many other benefits.

Since its inception until today, society has seen the potential within this technology that influences how we engage in our daily tasks and beyond. As a result, in today’s market, there is a silent battle between the Artificial Intelligence chatbots.

So, if you want to learn more about it, you’ve landed on the right page! We will discuss everything you need to know about Bard vs ChatGPT.

Are you interested in their applications and use cases? What are the main differentiators, the accuracy, or simply which is considered the best?

Then, read further, test these two popular AI chatbots, and share these findings.

What is a Chatbot, and How Does it Work?

As both ChatGPT and Google Bard are chatbots, we think it is essential to understand what a chatbot is. So, a chatbot is an AI-based software program based on the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) model, besides other large language models.

These AI applications are designed to offer conversational responses to users’ inquiries, providing essential information and alleviating the process of understanding a concept. Nonetheless, it is not limited to only this.

The AI chatbots integrate multiple technologies to generate AI images, write, speak, and offer us the results we expect.

As such, the chatbots use Generative AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models, and Sentiment Analysis, besides other innovative technologies. However, these are not the only technologies used.

Moreover, the “virtual assistants” offer a new, effortless way to interact with products and concepts, offering overall human-like responses. As such, they can be found anywhere, from SMS, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger to Google Assistant, Siri, or Alexa, and beyond, like ChatGPT, Bard, Bing, and others.

Now, we can move on and dive deeper into our main subject, Bard vs ChatGPT, discovering the key differences, so please read further.

What is ChatGPT?

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT, or Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is an AI-based application that uses Machine Learning in conjunction with Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) and other technologies to respond to users’ queries via image, text, or voice

Furthermore, based on what Sam Altman advised in a Twitter post, 1 million users have embraced this technology just five days after its launch. So, this tells us something about the potential of this tool.

What is Google Bard?

What is Google Bard?

As mentioned, the tech battle is real, and as a result, earlier this year, Google launched Bard, its own AI chatbot.

Google Bard integrates some of the newest technologies, such as LaMDA, PaLM 2, Imagen, and MusicLM, to allow users to interact through text, image, video, and audio.

Moreover, Google advises us that this new chatbot is more capable of reasoning, multilingualism, and coding than others on the market, thanks to the fact that it is a Large Language Model that also uses search engine data.

Given Bard’s capabilities, it can be used to improve web search queries or as a personal assistant besides the primary conversational uses. Furthermore, Bard supports over 40 languages and over 230 countries and territories.

Additionally, since Adobe and Google announced their partnership last month, Google Bard users can enjoy the benefits of Generative AI.

As a result, users can create beautifully crafted images directly within Bard’s chat based on text input, thus offering a visual context that could be used in many instances.

Bard Features:

  • Provide educational content;
  • Analyze images and create related content;
  • Creative writing;
  • Project Management;
  • Write code;
  • Brainstorm ideas;
  • Offer up-to-date information;

As mentioned in GPT’s case, these are not the only features but the most common and frequent ones asked for.

ChatGPT vs Bard | A Detailed Comparison

ChatGPT – Google Bard | Tech and Architecture

There are a few key differences between Google Bard and ChatGPT, starting with the fact that these two large language models have different architectural information and technologies, as discussed above.

First, Google Bard uses an LLM designed to offer more human-like responses, emphasizing logic and reasoning. As such, we could say that Google Bard is inclined more towards understanding the quality of the information and the context than ChatGPT 3.

On the other hand, ChatGPT, the default version, was trained on a pre-defined block of data that has yet to be updated since 2021, and only ChatGPT premium has been trained on a larger dataset.

However, since ChatGPT utilizes the GPT architecture, Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, the LLM manages to perform various natural language tasks.

Google Bard vs ChatGPT | Accuracy

Until now, we all know these chatbots are susceptible to AI hallucinations and aren’t always accurate. So, be sure not to focus your work solely on it.

However, Google Bard can scrape web pages by performing a Google search, thus giving an upper hand for offering a more accurate version of the information.

Additionally, based on its contextual and logical reasoning and search engine data, Google Bard can deliver better data than its rival, ChatGPT, by generating conversational responses.

Google Bard vs ChatGPT | Data Privacy

Data privacy should be something we are all thinking about, mainly because anyone can input sensitive information into the chatbot. So, let’s discover how ChatGPT and Google Bard treat this sensitive subject.

First of all, both ChatGPT and Google Bard state that they are sharing your personal information with their third-party service providers, like cloud hosting providers, payment processors, and customer service providers.

Moreover, both ChatGPT and Google Bard stated that your conversation within the application will be used to improve the quality of the AI.

As such, Bard, ChatGPT, and other chatbots are drawing on its knowledge, relevant information from prior interactions, and conversation history to better generate responses.

ChatGPT and Bard | Applications, Add-Ons, and Integrations

ChatGPT and Bard can be integrated with other add-ons and APIs and connect to other apps, yet the process is different.

Bard can access its Chrome extension to access real-time information from other Google apps, like Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Maps, and YouTube. On the other hand, ChatGPT premium does the same but uses plugins and API access.

As a result, you can simply export the answers from Bard directly to Google Docs without copying and pasting them, as seen in ChatGPT’s case.

At this point, we could not get over that Bard’s power also lies in the comprehensive ecosystem that Google created, which we also saw in Apple’s environment. And as we know, only good things can come when you use the entire ecosystem, in this case, Bard, in conjunction with the Google apps.

Moreover, Bard is free and can still perform a Google search, unlike ChatGPT’s case, where you need the premium plan to access web pages and retrieve online information based on specific search results.

At this point, it is essential to understand that Bard does not offer API access.

Bard – ChatGPT | Test Questions

The following chapters will compare Google Bard vs GPT to better understand their offerings, benefits, and limitations. As such, we asked both ChatGPT and Google Bard to answer questions regarding different concepts and interests, and as you’ll see, there are a few key differences.

So, we tested ChatGPT and Bard, and for the time being, we will let you decide which of these AI models answered best, but you’ll see a difference in ChatGPT’s responses compared to what Bard gave.

1. Self-awareness

First, we wanted to see how these two chatbots acted when asked if they were sentient. As you can see, GPT offers a succinct answer compared to its rival, acknowledging its AI language model capabilities and limitations.

ChatGPT - Self-awareness

Unlike ChatGPT, Bard’s response is more complex, even though it has the same limitations. However, it surprises us with the statement, “I am excited to see what the future holds for AI, and I hope to play a role in making the world a better place.”

Google Bard Self Awareness

2. Research

When we asked ChatGPT about AI’s history, it offered pretty accurate answers, but basic and with bullet points, which we can all agree is kind of ChatGPT’s response signature.

ChatGPT - Research

However, Bard’s response is more in tune with learning and researching since it provides context besides the bullet points.

Google-Bard-Research

3. Ethical Reasoning

As always, Bard takes the lead, offering a more complex response. In this example, we asked both AIs (Artificial Intelligence) how to protect access to AI from bad actors.

ChatGPT - Ethical Reasoning

Though the answers are similar, Bard takes it up, offering a solution-based explanation compared to the theoretical one offered by ChatGPT.

Google Bard - Ethical Reasoning

4. Social Media Copy

Since most AIs are used for long and short-form copy, let’s see how Bard and ChatGPT pass this test. As such, we asked each of them to generate a social media post for 10 Reviews.

ChatGPT - Social media Post Text

As you can see, ChatGPT generates a short social media post text. Yet, from the start, it could be more professional as it uses lots of emojis and, indeed, an assertive tone, but overall, it needs more consistency.

Regarding Bard’s answer, I think someone did their homework better. As you can see, Bard offers a more complex solution with a clear structure. It tells you the headline, body, and call to action. Moreover, the body is complex and offers four benefits.

Bard - Social Media Post Text

5. Own Advantages over Competitor

We asked each of them to answer a comparison question – what are each advantages over its competitor? As you can see, ChatGPT hits us with a short answer, and not only this, but it needs to highlight its advantages and benefits.

ChatGPT advantage over Bard

If we ask the same question to a business person, the answer should revolve around its qualities, benefits, and what plus value it brings.

However, when we asked Bard, the AI gave a comprehensive answer, highlighting his abilitiesbenefits, and overall ease of use.

Bard Advantage over ChatGPT

6. Factual Answers

Regarding factual questions, Bard takes the lead, offering an accurate and correct answer when asked about the number of tech layoffs from 2022.

Google Bard Factual Answers

ChatGPT, the free version, is limited and cannot retrieve these facts online.

ChatGPT - Factual Answers

After this test, we could say that ChatGPT lost ground in the face of Bard. Moreover, its capabilities are more limited than Bard’s. Regardless of the question, Bard replied more conversationally than ChatGPT, which resumed to an informational answer.

Also, Bard did a better job for social media posts, offering a headline, a detailed body post, and a well-structured call-to-action in a friendly and engaging tone.

On the other hand, ChatGPT offers such short, emoji-filled social media text compared to its rival, and we could say that the winner speaks, or writes, for itself, right?

As these answers were quite accurate, both chatbots are susceptible to AI hallucinations. So, there are better ways than relying solely on their response.

Bard and ChatGPT | Use Cases

2. Customer Support

As mentioned, both chatbots offer API (Application Programming Interface) integrations and can be used in customer support inquiries. As such, both can serve the customer through text, assisting with ease.

Since Bard has more available languages, it might seem the way to go, but you must constantly check their updates and product roadmap development.

As such, both Bards and ChatGPT can offer the following:

  • Answer customer queries;
  • Multi-language support;
  • Personalized answers;

Both AI chatbots can be used in customer support, automating tasks, improving customer support and experience, reducing labor costs, and improving overall customer satisfaction with the said product.

3. Content Generation

As both platforms can be used by students, marketers, business owners, and others, they could be a powerful addition to anyone’s toolkit.

As mentioned, both are susceptible to AI hallucinations. Still, it could be a good starting point for generating content, like social media posts, blog posts, or email drafts for marketing campaigns.

As such, the chatbots can be used for social media posts and blog articles, if not entirely a well-written 1200-word article, at least giving a proper structure and some general ideas.

Moreover, you can ask them to write product descriptions, email marketing copy, brainstorm ideas, assist with other marketing collaterals, and others.

4. Automating Tasks

We already know that Bard and ChatGPT can automate tasks; we also asked each chatbot to assist us by explaining the process. As a result, Bard maintained his conversational skills, advising that he could be used for a variety of mundane tasks, such as:

  • Generating and sending emails;
  • Creating and managing reports;
  • Customer support;
  • Automated data entry;
  • Automated marketing tasks;

We asked ChatGPT the same question, and it kept its short, informational style, giving us a more practical answer. Indeed, we got a solution, but it would have been nice to explain a concept by integrating the solution as well.

ChatGPT - Automating Task

These are just the most used cases, but the list can go on into research, educational tutoring, brainstorming ideas, offering cooking recipes, and many other opportunities.

ChatGPT vs Bard | Usability and UX

Regarding the usability side of these chatbots, we say both offer seamless interaction with the platform, even though Bard brings a more modern, clean, fresh look.

Moreover, in a study conducted by the father of UX, Nielsen Norman Group, Bard seemed more helpful than ChatGPT. This study also integrates the Bing chat since it uses the same AI technology as ChatGPT.

ChatGPT vs Bard Final Thoughts

Both Bard and ChatGPT are potent tools that can be used in various instances and for solving multiple tasks. However, the best model is subjective and depends on your specific needs.

Whether you are looking to automate some of your business tasks, you need a killer PM to help you manage your business plan, or you wish to create AI-generated content, like a blog post, choosing between ChatGPT vs. Bard requires testing, feedback, and improvement, before settling for one.

As such, please do your due diligence and inform yourself about their capabilities. Also, you can have fun testing the AI chatbots and only select what best represents and answers your business needs.

If one app is more suitable for answering quick questions on the go, the other platform could be more conversational, walking you through a task.
